The Roots & Fruits of Christian Love

Posted on March 15, 2010 in Blog, Congregational Resources, Sunday Sermons

Yesterday Pastor Emilio, in continuing with our expositional series through 1 John, preached from 1 John 4:7-12. The outline is as follows:

Christian love is rooted in…

  • God (who He is)
    • He is the source
    • We are the conduit and object
  • The gospel (what God has done)
    • God manifest His love in…
      • Sending His Son
      • Crushing His Son
      • Communicating His love with us
  • The invisibility of God

In our understanding of love it is essential we get down to the root of it, namely God Himself, the love of the Trinity from all eternity! Pastor Emilio explains in the 3 minute clip below:

When explaining 1 John 4:10, “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”, Pastor Emilio shows the importance of knowing what propitiation is. Knowing it is not a word we use in our daily vernacular he gave the definition of it from Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology. It was as follows:

“a sacrifice that bears God’s wrath to the end and in so doing changes God’s wrath toward us into favor.”

Pastor Emilio explained the connection between this doctrine and the practicality of love (2 minutes clip):

Finally, in explaining the last point, Pastor Emilio explains how we see God though He is invisible and what some of the fruits of love are  (3 minute clip):
