In continuing with our sermon series through 1 Corinthians, Pastor Jay Jesuroga preached on “Analogies Clarifying Christian Liberty” from 1 Corinthians 10:14-22.

  • Paul’s Exhortation to Flee Idolatry (1 Corinthians 10:14)
  • Two Analogies Clarifying Christian Liberty
    • Lord’s Supper (1 Corinthians 10:15-17)
    • Israel (1 Corinthians 10:18-22)

“When you worship something it brings you into fellowship with what you are worshiping…” Pastor Jay gives the “whole sermon”  in the clip, under 2 minutes, below:

When we got into 1 Corinthians 10:16-17, talking about the Lord Supper/Communion, we looked at the 3 major views of communion:

  1. Transubstantiation (The Roman Catholic doctrine which states, “the whole substance of the bread and the wine changes into the substance of the body and blood of Christ…“)
  2. Consubstantiation (The belief, as taught by Martin Luther, that the elements during communion are actually bread and wine which coexist with the body and blood of Jesus. i.e. Christ is “in, with, and upon the elements”)
  3. Memorial/Symbolic (The bread and wine are symbols of Christ death)

After explaining why we don’t hold to the first two views, Pastor Jay explained why we believe the Biblical view is the 3rd view above. He went on though to describe what other Protestant (especially Reformed churches) hold to in addition to this 3rd view, that is, that Christ is spiritually present in a special way during a communion service (4 minutes):

Paul’s deals with an objection that may come up after saying earlier in 1 Corinthians 8:4 that there is “no such thing as an idol”. Thought that is true, behind every false idol is a demon, so partaking in false worship is fellowshipping with demons (4 minutes):
