Intro to Philippians: Paul’s Relationship to the Church in Philippi

Posted on November 9, 2010 in Blog, Congregational Resources, Sunday Sermons

Having finished up our sermon series through 1-3 John, Pastor Emilio Ramos started off our series through Philippians by preaching “Intro to Philippians: Paul’s Relationship to the Church in Philippi” from various Scriptures.

Paul wrote his letter to the Philippians during a time of imprisonment, probably in Rome (around 62 A.D.). Located along the famous Egnatian Way, Philippi was the site of a key military victory by Augustus Caesar, and as a result it was declared a Roman colony, ensuring it immunity from taxation and drawing many veterans to settle there. Philippi was the first city in present-day Europe where Paul established a church.

Paul’s Relationship to the Philippian Church:

  • The Gospel Coming to Philippi
    • By Two Sovereign Acts of God
      • God’s Sovereign Call (Acts 16:9-12)
      • God’s Sovereign Grace (Acts 16:13-34)
  • The Philippians Love for Paul (Phil. 4:15 | 2 Cor. 11: 7-9)
  • Their Participation in the Gospel (Phil. 1:3-6; 12)
  • Passion for Their Joy
    • Joy Resulting from Regeneration (Acts 16:34)
    • Mutual Joy (Phil. 2:17-18)
    • Maintaining Joy (2 Cor. 1:24)
    • Commandments to be Joyful (Ps. 2:11; 37:4 | Phil. 4:4)
    • Cultivating True Joy (Col. 3:5-15)

The common goal between Paul and the church in Philippi was the advance of the gospel. (2 minutes clip below):
