Abuse of the Lord’s Supper

In continuing with our sermon series through 1 Corinthians, Pastor Jay Jesuroga preached on “The Abuse of the Lord’s Supper” from 1 Corinthians 11:17-22.

The outline is as follows:

The Abuse of the Lord’s Supper…

  1. The Report that Paul Received about Communion Abuse and Schisms/Divisions (1 Cor. 11:17-19)
  2. The Nature of these Schisms/Divisions (1 Cor. 11:20-22)

This text starts off with a harsh rebuke from Paul, saying that when they come together for church it is NOT for the better! When we come together as a church is it for the better? Why was their coming together (especially when they took the Lord’s Supper/Communion) for the worse? (1 minute clip below):

Though it may be hard, it is sometimes necessary that we be rebuked. We see that Paul cares for this church because he is willing to rebuke them… this is because it is for the health of the church. [under 3 minutes]):

This rebuke by Paul is spurred on from a report. Is this considered gossip? What should be done about reports like this? (3 minutes):

This rebuke by Paul has a goal, it is for the unity of the church. We at Sovereign Joy may not exclude people from communion based on class like the Corinthians did, but is there something we can learn from this? (3 minutes):
