Tongues & Intelligibility in Church

In continuing with our sermon series through 1 Corinthians, Pastor Jay Jesuroga preached from 1 Corinthians 14:1-19, a message entitled “Tongues & Intelligibility in Church“.

  • Introduction/Biblical Survey On Tongues
  • Prophecy Is Greater Than Tongues Because Of Its Immediate Intelligibility (1 Cor. 14:1-5)
    • Tongues Speaking Is Not Immediately Intelligible (1 Cor. 14:2)
    • Prophecy Is Greater Because Of It Is Immediately Intelligible (1 Cor. 14:3-5)
      • (unless there is an interpretation of the tongue)
  • Uninterpreted Tongues Are Not Profitable For The Church (1 Cor. 14:6-12)
    • Paul Shows This By Three Analogies (1 Cor. 14:7-11)
  • The Application of Tongues (1 Cor. 14:13-19)
    • Pray You Can Interpret Your Tongue To Edify The Church (1 Cor. 14:13-17)
    • Paul Wasn’t Against Their Gift But Their Practice Of The Gift (1 Cor. 14:18-19)
    • Only What Is Intelligible Is Allowed During Worship Services
    • God Values The Mind

We see from these verses that intelligibility, being able to understand what is going on, is vital to a worship service. God uses our mind to sanctify us (2 minutes):

We are to be ever-learning, ever-fathoming our fathomless God. Let us not think we’ve arrived just because we adhere to “The Five Points of Calvinism” (2 minutes):
