Dear Sovereign Joy Family,
As of today, the death toll in Joplin, MO has risen to 138, and there are still many missing persons yet to be found. Joplin is only five hours drive from Haltom City, and there are many lost and hurting people who need to receive the healing power of the gospel. A group of SJCC church members have decided to travel to Joplin to attempt to meet this need on Tuesday and Wednesday of this coming week. We pray that you would consider whether the Lord may be calling you to join us in this effort.
Though evangelism is a dire need in Joplin, there are also many other needs that need to be met. Your gifts are needed. They need cooks, carpenters, manpower for debris cleanup and, yes, evangelists. Please pray and ask God whether you may have a role to play in this trip. More than anything, pray that God will bless the efforts of Sovereign Joy Community Church as we seek to serve and evangelize the community of Joplin, MO.
We are also accepting donations of essential goods (i.e. diapers: size 4, 5, 6 and socks, etc.). If you’re able to donate to this effort, please bring your donations to church on Sunday. If you believe that God is calling you join us, please contact either Billy Leonhart or Trisha Ramos no later than Sunday at 9pm. Thank you in advance for your consideration of this matter. May God bless you and our church.
By way of reminder, don’t forget that beginning tomorrow (Friday, June 3, 2011) we will begin going through the Old Testament book of Hosea!
As an aid to this sermon series, please feel free to review a previous post on “Why Study the Old Testament” and Pastor Emilio’s introduction to the Old Testament Prophets in general (from his sermon “Meet the Prophets”, reposted in full below for your reference):
Since Pastor Jay was out of town, Pastor Emilio Ramos gave a special message from Jeremiah 1:1-10 entitled, “Meet The Prophets“.
Pastor Emilio started off explaining why we should study the Old Testament as well as announced the next book he will start preaching through since he just finished going through John’s gospel (5 minute clip below):
Why study the Old Testament?
- “For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God” – Acts 20:27
- “…the scroll of the book it is written of Me…” – Heb. 10:7
- We will be the better equipped to enjoy the New Covenant ministry & it’s blessing
- The New Testament contrast the Old with the New Covenant (2 Cor. 3)
- Because of what has been inspired, namely, “All Scripture is inspired by God…” (2 Tim. 3:15-17)
- Because of its Christo-centric nature, as Jesus Himself described (Luke 24:13-35, 27)
The best way for us to familiarize ourselves with the Old Testament is simply to interact with it, and so we began to go through Jeremiah 1:1-10 to learn more about the prophets, and particularly Jeremiah.
The outline is as follows:
- 3 Things Common To All Prophets
- 1) They Have A History That Unlocks Their Ministry (Jer. 1:1-3)
- They were inspired of God (2 Pet. 1:20)
- Jeremiah was dealing with the sin of syncretism (mixing worship of the true God with false gods)
- 2) They Had A Divine Calling (Jer. 1:4-8 | 1 Cor. 1:26 | Heb. 11:32-38)
- They preached in and out of season (2 Tim. 4:2)
- They had a special message for God’s people
- 3) They Had A Theological Message (Jer. 1:9-10)
- The importance of having God’s perspective on issues
- God put His words in their mouth (Deut. 18:18)
- Jeremiah didn’t just speak to politicians but also religious leaders (Jer. 1:11-19)
Every prophet had a divine calling, even in their youth. Let us not make excuses for following God due to age. Let us remember the kind of people God is pleased to call [1 Cor. 1:25-31] (2 minutes clip below):
Let us, Christians in the church, not get discouraged by other peoples giftings, God can use us. A look at how God used the prophets according to Hebrews 11 (3 minutes):
Is the gospel in the Old Testament? Is the Old Testament about Jesus? (1 minute):

Yesterday marked the three year anniversary of our first church service.

Sovereign Joy Bible Study - 2007
od in His grace and providence has seen fit to bring together a people concerned with His glory above all things. Emilio Ramos and Jason Jesuroga (founding elders) felt the deep call of God to plant a biblical church in Keller, TX. Through a series of events God led both of these men out to Texas. Beginning with Emilio, sensing the call to move from California to Texas and to seek God for vision and future ministry. By faith, Emilio and his wife Trisha, moved to the Keller area. Immediately upon their move, Emilio began a small bible study (early 2007).
While meeting in a home and teaching through the book of John, God saw fit to grow the size of Sovereign Joy (then) Bible Study; taking the group from about eight to over fifty in less than a year. Pastor Jason, his wife Christina, and their four children were currently in Maine where Jay was pastoring a church for several years. God saw fit to bring Jay to Sovereign Joy and soon after, the church, Sovereign Joy Community Church (SJCC), was planted.
All glory and thanks be to God for what he has done in bringing numerous families and brethren together for the work of the ministry. Without giving all of the details of our testimony, constitution, and history (which would take up a book in it of itself) Sovereign Joy has had one sole vision since its infancy. Our desire is that God would be made much of in the world, through Biblically sound preaching, heartfelt worship, and a zealous passion to see the kingdom of God advanced in all the earth through outreach and evangelism.
The early days of Sovereign Joy - 2007
Our First Service 02/24/2008:
Our First Service
We opened up our very first worship service together as a church, by praying together to God, by song, for help. The song we sang was “Jesus, With Thy Church Abide” (and I [Jason Delgado] took the liberty to put the lyrics into first person so it makes it more of a prayer from the church to God). Listen below:
Download audio: [audio:hymn/Jesus With Thy Church Abide (with 1st person lyrics).mp3]
After worship through song, Pastor Emilio Ramos preached a message that placed God as the foundation, center, and focus for the church’s purpose and health. Listen or download:

It is always important to reflect on the Lord’s faithfulness on New Years. More than anything we should use this as a time to reflect on God’s faithfulness and give thanks to Him for His unfailing love and mercy which He has so richly lavished us with in Christ.
I am personally grateful for the ministry of Sovereign Joy Community Church (SJCC).
I am grateful that God has taken our church through so much expositional terrain.
I am grateful for the installment of our small group ministry where we can challenge each other to reflect further on the Word of God and challenge each other to apply His Word in our lives.
I am grateful for God’s enduring patience with us as a small church that still has a long way to go in many areas.
Most of all I am grateful for the people of SJCC, their eagerness to serve, evangelize, and it has also been encouraging to hear all the stories of God’s faithfulness to provide and sustain His people through many trials and tests. This has been the most meaningful aspect of pastoring at SJCC, seeing people’s lives changed through the Word of God. SJCC is our family and I look forward to seeing more people become involved, receive meaningful ministry and fellowship, become more involved in each other’s lives, and serve one another with eagerness and zeal as they seek to bring glory to God by our love for one another.
To all at SJCC, Happy New Years, Soli Deo Gloria!
